The Influence of Social Media on Public Relations

Influence of social media

We already know the influence of social media and how important it is these days. Whether we are sharing a photo, chatting with a friend or even looking for new job opportunities.

Unveiling a new paradigm of contact, Social Media is “cool”. In addition to being dynamic and allowing for new modes of expression and conversation. But what will be its impact on companies and, on Public Relations? Can we already say that they are really having an impact on how Public Relations are improving?

Fortunately, the answer is affirmative. We are moving towards a set of transformations that lead companies to becoming “best friends” with their stakeholders on social media. Because of this, companies are thinking more intelligently when incorporating technology into their strategies. Does it make sense for social media and Public Relations to act separately? In short, the answer is no.

Immediate

Interaction has gained and accelerated pace. If before there was time for face-to-face meetings between journalists and PR, time is now reduced for most topics and interlocutors. And where does social media come in? They became the true allies of every PR professional by facilitating faster and more direct contact with journalists. And the best of all is that journalists themselves appreciate this type of contact and take advantage of these platforms to be in contact with Public Relations Professionals.

Function

The time has passed when PR simply wrote and sent Press Releases and maintained a conventional relation with traditional media. PR have a new function and, consequently, greater importance. They help to build the online voice of an organization, through the type of content that is published, and are responsible for managing and protecting their reputation. Promotion, publication, online monitoring, engagement and measurement now belong to the PR family. The range of available tools is growing.

Content publishing

Publishing and sharing content are not as commonplace as it may seem. Publishing and sharing a tweet on Twitter or original comments on Facebook now complete the PR universe and offer it an increasingly digital character. Today’s professionals are no longer just focused on delivering information and news to audiences; they are also concerned with generating new conversations. Social media has become an integrated part of the marketing mix  strategy and PR professionals are doing their best to take advantage of that.
